During World Book Week, some of our young people had the fantastic opportunity to visit Waterstones, where they were warmly welcomed by Stuart and Scott. We would like to say a huge thank you to Stuart and Scott for giving our young people such an enjoyable and memorable experience. The visits were a real highlight and helped bring the world of books to life. The young people loved listening to the stories that were shared and exploring the bookshop. They were especially excited to learn a little about what it's like to work in a bookshop. It was a great chance for them to ask questions, discover new books, and understand more about the different jobs people do. Experiences like this help to encourage a love of reading and give our young people valuable opportunities to connect with the community. Thank you again to Stuart and Scott for making us feel so welcome and for helping make our World Book Week celebrations so special. We hope to visit again soon!

Class 3 had a fantastic morning at Huish Park, the home of Yeovil Town F.C., as part of their employability unit. Many members of the class had expressed an interest in becoming footballers, and the club were delighted to support by giving them a memorable behind-the-scenes experience. The visit began with an exciting training session led by coaches from the club’s community sports trust, giving the young people a chance to get active on the pitch and learn some new skills. They then took part in a Q&A session with first-team footballer Josh Staunton, who spoke about his career, the dedication required to play professionally, and what life is like as a footballer. The young people were also treated to a tour of Huish Park, where they were able to see areas of the stadium that fans don’t usually get to visit. One particularly brave young person even had the opportunity to try their hand at stadium announcing, which was a highlight of the morning. During the visit, the group also met members of the club’s Under-19 academy team, who shared their own journeys in football and talked about the hard work and commitment needed to progress through the academy system. It was an inspiring and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. A huge thank you goes to Dominic at Yeovil Town, the community sports trust coaches, Josh Staunton, and the Under-19 academy team for making the morning so special for Class 3.

Class 8 had a fantastic and busy month filled with new learning and experiences. The young people explored the history of flight , learning how aeroplanes and helicopters have developed over time, as well as discovering some important events in aviation history. As part of this topic, Class 8 visited the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum  with Classes 6 and 7. It was a great afternoon where the young people learned a lot and enjoyed seeing a variety of aircraft up close. During their lessons with Leonardo, the young people also had the opportunity to design and build their own aeroplanes, which was a fun and creative way to bring their learning to life. We also celebrated WOW Week  at school. The class met visitors who shared their career journeys and experiences, giving our young people new ideas and inspiration for the future. This term we have also started cooking lessons , helping young people learn valuable life skills and gain confidence in preparing food independently.

As part of our World Book Day  celebrations, Class 5 took part in a creative art activity inspired by their love of reading. The young people used watercolour paints to design and create their own unique bookmarks, experimenting with colour, pattern and different painting techniques. Each bookmark reflected the imagination and personality of the young people, while also giving them something special to use when enjoying their favourite books. The activity was a wonderful way to combine creativity with a celebration of reading, and the young people were very proud of their finished designs.

On Thursday 5th March 2026, Fairmead School came alive with stories, imagination, and creativity as young people and staff celebrated World Book Day together. The school was filled with excitement as many young people and staff arrived dressed as their favourite book characters. From classic story heroes to modern favourites, the costumes brought much-loved books to life and created a colourful, fun atmosphere throughout the day. A variety of book-themed activities took place across the school. The young people enjoyed book themed quizzes, while book swap sessions gave everyone the chance to discover something new to read. These activities encouraged our young people to talk about the books they love and share recommendations with their friends. There was a real buzz in the air throughout the day, with reading, storytelling, and laughter happening in every corner of the school. Events like these are a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of books and remind everyone how powerful stories can be in bringing people together. We hope all of our young people enjoyed the celebrations and felt inspired to keep exploring new books and sharing their love of reading. World Book Day was a fantastic reminder that a good story can open the door to imagination, adventure, and learning.

During Spring 1 half term, many of Hedgehog Class’s learning experiences have been inspired by the wonderful story  Whatever Next!  by Jill Murphy.  The young people have loved following Baby Bear on his imaginative journey to the moon — and safely back home again just in time for bath time! The story has given us so many rich opportunities for learning through play, exploration, and creativity.  Using this beautiful book as our starting point, the young people have been: listening to and enjoying rich storytelling language, exploring sensory experiences linked to space and travel, practising matching and sequencing using objects, symbols and words, developing their imagination through role play and creative activities.  From packing a picnic for the moon to blasting off rockets, the hedgehogs have fully embraced the adventure. Undoubtedly though, the most enjoyable activity has been creating, testing and mess making with ‘moon sand’!   We are currently using the photos below to help us create our very own Hedgehog Class media book, retelling the story in our own words. The children are so proud to see their learning captured and shared in this way.  Enjoying sharing the story.  We found space helmets. Blasting off in our space boots.  We made sandwiches for a picnic.  Making sandcastles (and mess) with moon sand.  Making our own rockets and exploring different materials.  Counting backwards to blast off rockets.  Following instructions and using our own creativity to make bear masks.   Developing language, reading and sequencing through communication boards.

This half term in Rabbit Class we have been exploring our class story  We All Go Travelling By . We have loved this book, especially the catchy song – you may have even heard it being sung at home! Our learning has focused on different types of transport, and we’ve explored these in lots of fun, hands-on ways. We’ve explored bikes, trains and cars, and used small world play to act out journeys with trains and vehicles. We have also enjoyed getting creative by making car tracks using paint, watching the wheels roll and leave colourful marks. It’s been a joyful term full of singing and exploring. We’re so proud of how rabbit class have joined in.

Class 4 had a truly fantastic morning exploring the world of work during our visit to Westlands Entertainment Venue . The trip gave our young people an exciting opportunity to step beyond the classroom and see first-hand how a busy entertainment venue operates behind the scenes. We were warmly welcomed by Martin, the Marketing Manager, who generously gave his time to show us around. From the moment we arrived, the young people were buzzing with curiosity. Martin explained the wide range of roles involved in running the venue, from marketing and event planning to hospitality and customer service, helping everyone understand just how many different skills are needed to make events successful. The highlight of the morning was when the young people were invited to step into some of these roles themselves. They eagerly took on practical tasks, laying up tables ready for guests, changing a promotional poster, and topping up flyers and brochures to ensure visitors had the information they needed. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, teamwork and attention to detail as the young people embraced each responsibility. Experiences like this are invaluable in helping our young people connect their learning to the wider community. Seeing how communication, organisation and creativity are used in real-life settings brings classroom lessons to life and helps our young people to start thinking about future possibilities. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Martin and all the staff at Westlands for making us feel so welcome. Your time, patience and encouragement made the visit both memorable and inspiring for our young people. We are very grateful for the opportunity and look forward to future partnerships that continue to broaden horizons and spark ambition.

We have been learning all about what a library is, how it works and why it is such an important place for learning and enjoyment. The young people explored the features of our school library and discussed how it compares to the library in town. They noticed differences in size, layout and the types of books available, while also recognising the shared purpose of both spaces — to inspire a love of reading. During our sessions, the young people have had the opportunity to explore the shelves independently, learning how books are organised and practising how to choose texts that interest them. They have shown great curiosity, taking time to browse different genres and discover new authors. A highlight of our learning has been practising our reading skills. The young people have enjoyed spending time with their own chosen books, building confidence and fluency. Some even took on the role of storyteller, reading aloud to a small group just like real librarians at story time! It was wonderful to see them using clear voices, expression and enthusiasm to bring their stories to life. Through these activities, Class 2 have not only developed their understanding of how libraries work, but have also strengthened their independence, communication skills and love of reading. We are so proud of our library experts — we can’t wait to see what books they discover next!

Throughout this half term, Class 2 have been stepping confidently into the spotlight by taking on the role of presenter during our special mention assemblies. Each young person has had the opportunity to stand before the class and share positive news, celebrating achievements and recognising the successes of others. In preparation for their presenting role, the young people have been developing important communication skills. They have thought carefully about their body language — standing tall, facing their audience and showing confidence through their posture. They have practised using a clear tone of voice, making sure they speak loudly enough to be heard while maintaining expression and enthusiasm. Reading information accurately has also been a key focus, with young people taking care to pronounce words correctly and present the details clearly. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow week by week. Even those who felt a little nervous at first have shown fantastic resilience, rising to the challenge and delivering their announcements with pride. Supporting one another along the way has made the experience even more special, creating a positive and encouraging atmosphere within the class. Taking on the role of presenter has not only strengthened their speaking and listening skills but has also helped to build self-esteem and independence. We are incredibly proud of the maturity and professionalism they have shown. Who knows — perhaps we have some future newsreaders, presenters or public speakers in our midst!

We were delighted to welcome a dental nurse to our school today! She spoke to our Life Skills classes about the importance of good dental hygiene and how to keep our teeth healthy and strong. The young people enjoyed listening to a fun story all about teeth, which helped them understand why brushing every day is so important. Groups even had the opportunity to practise their brushing technique and learn the best way to care for their smiles. We also discovered which foods help keep our teeth healthy and which ones should be enjoyed as an occasional treat.  A big thank you for such an engaging and informative visit — our young people are now brushing experts in the making!

The young people in Class 1 have been extending their learning beyond the classroom by exploring both their school community and the wider world around them. During recent visits outside of Fairmead, they observed a range of professionals at work and gained valuable insight into the different careers within our local community. Back at school, learning continued as the children explored the many roles and responsibilities that help Fairmead run smoothly each day. They began by sharing their own ideas about what adults at Fairmead might do in their roles, with wonderfully imaginative suggestions ranging from using laptops to playing with dinosaurs! Class 1 particularly enjoyed speaking directly with professionals, asking thoughtful questions, and discovering what people enjoy most about their jobs. One aspiring zookeeper was especially eager to share her knowledge of animals and pets, much to everyone’s delight.
