The Life Skills Element
The Life Skills Element of the curriculum provides a personalised, aspirational and holistic programme that equips every young person with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead a fulfilling and increasingly independent adult life.
Through a structured, needs-led and progressive approach, young people develop essential skills across six key areas:
-
Independent Living,
-
Employability,
-
Health and Wellbeing,
-
Shopping and Money Management,
-
Travel and Community Access,
-
Hobbies and Interests.
Learning is adapted to each young person’s developmental stage, assessed needs and aspirations, enabling them to learn, practise and apply functional skills in meaningful contexts within school and the wider community.
Life Skills develops independence, resilience and autonomy, supporting young people to make informed choices, communicate effectively, build positive relationships and manage risk safely. It complements and strengthens our RSHE provision, preparing young people for life beyond school.
We recognise that every young person’s journey is unique. Assessment is therefore linked to the knowledge and skills within each phase and theme, with opportunities, where appropriate, to work towards individual EHCP outcomes. This ensures learning remains relevant, purposeful and responsive to individual needs and aspirations.
We work collaboratively with young people, families and relevant professionals, ensuring their views and expertise inform curriculum planning and provision. Every young person has equitable access to Life Skills through planned classroom learning, widening learning environments and real-life experiences, with opportunities to reflect, practise and transfer skills at an appropriate level. Through this approach, young people develop the confidence, skills and autonomy needed for successful transition into adulthood and life beyond school.
