The Formal Element

Our formal curriculum is designed to provide every pupil with a coherent, ambitious and appropriately adapted programme of learning that prepares them well for life beyond school. 

 

It is aligned with Birth to 5 Matters, the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum, meeting statutory requirements for the subjects taught and studied. At KS4, qualifications and accreditation pathways are carefully adapted to meet young people’s individual needs, supporting successful progression to their next stage. 

 

Our curriculum design ensures that: 

• Knowledge and skills are sequenced progressively across phases and year groups, with learning building logically on prior learning so that young people develop secure foundations and increasing independence. 

• Long-term curriculum frameworks and overviews inform medium-term planning, providing a coherent and carefully sequenced course of study that connects learning to meaningful experiences. 

• Learning outcomes are clearly defined, providing opportunities for young people to apply, practise and transfer their knowledge and skills across a range of contexts and settings. This is reflected in the development of our Life Skills curriculum. 

• Progression and expectations are clearly articulated through subject vision statements and mapped across long-term plans, ensuring that learning develops systematically over time. 

• Clear accreditation pathways are established, identifying the examinations and qualifications pupils will work towards and ensuring that these pathways are appropriate to their needs, aspirations and future destinations. 

 

Through this approach, learning is purposeful, progressive and connected, enabling every young person to build the knowledge, skills and understanding they need for their next stage of education, employment, independence and life beyond school.
