At Fairmead School young people learn about careers through: 

• Workplace visits

Primary Careers Days 

In November 2025 to support our focus on careers across primary groups we decided to have our first Primary Careers Day, where the whole focus could be careers and jobs. We wrote to families to ask that young people bring in something from home linked to careers and this would become a focus to start the day. 

 

During the day young people: 

• were able to communicate their future work preferences in a range of ways according to their own needs 

• had the opportunity to take part in job type activities, like pretending to be medics and bakers 

• had the opportunity to dress up in work uniform 

• played matching games linking jobs to workplaces 

• did pieces of art linked to their future job ideas 

 

Following the success of the day we went on to run two more days in 2025/26 and are planning to run them termly in 2026/27. 

 

World of Work (WOW) week - Started February 2026 

For the 2025/26 academic year we decided to host a World of Work week where visitors to the school can talk to our young people about the job they do and their own work journeys. We wrote to families and the wider staff team and asked for their support in talking to young people about their own career journeys. We were lucky enough to have some really good responses with each class having 4/5 visitors spread through the week to gain some valuable insight into some different jobs and the varied work journeys towards them. 

 

We are now planning for our second World of Work Week in the spring term. 

 

Previous Events 

 

Thales Glider Experience 

Deer and Badger class took part in a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day supported by the engineering firm Thales. As part of the day the young people learnt about the theory of flight and through an online classroom, and with the resources that had been sent to the school, took part in building their own gliders. 

 

Ivelhurst Care Home Visit 

A group of young people had the opportunity to visit Ivel Hurst Care home in Yeovil to learn about career opportunities within the care sector. During the visit young people had a tour of the facilities, met and talked to staff about their different roles, spent some time with residents and helped out in the kitchen. 

 

AIP Welding Experience 

We were visited by Kim Hunt from AIP Welding who talked to young people about working in welding and how they could go about this. As part of the visit young people had the opportunity to have a go at virtual welding, using virtual reality headsets and welding torches to try out welding for themselves. 

 

Next Step Careers Fair 

In September Fairmead School hosted our Next Steps Careers Fair, in the sports hall, where a number of providers attended the school to meet our young people and talk about some of their next step options for when they finish school. All secondary and upper primary young people the opportunity to join the event. The providers were: Yeovil College, Strode College, Department of work and Pensions (Job Centre), NHS, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Able2Achieve, Somerset Works and Platform Railway Education. 

 

Coding with Microsoft 

A group of young people from secondary were lucky enough to take part in a coding workshop run by staff from Microsoft. Staff from the company came to the school to run a day long workshop. As part of the day the team from Microsoft talked about their roles at Microsoft and how these had changed over the years. We were also joined by a group of young peoples from Fiveways school to take part in the experience. Young people used micro bits that they were able to programme using a Microsoft coding platform that allowed them to make alarms, send messages, light up to sound and light inputs and many other functions.
