The Holistic Element
Our holistic curriculum recognises that successful learning and preparation for life depend on developing the whole young person. It responds to the diverse developmental, emotional, social, health, wellbeing and independence needs of Fairmead young people, ensuring that these are considered alongside their academic and subject-specific learning.
We aim to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, experiences and support they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, communicate effectively, develop their independence and make informed choices. Opportunities to develop these areas are embedded throughout the school experience and are connected to each young person’s individual needs, aspirations and future life.
Our approach is collaborative. Teachers, subject leads and specialist therapists work together to identify barriers to participation and development and to ensure that appropriate strategies/ interventions are implemented. Where appropriate, our work is further informed by external professionals and multi-agency partners, enabling us to draw on specialist expertise to support young people’s communication, sensory, physical, emotional and wider developmental needs.
The holistic curriculum provides opportunities for young people to:
-
develop their personal, social and emotional skills, including self-awareness, confidence, resilience and positive relationships;
-
develop communication and interaction skills that enable them to express their needs, make choices and participate in their communities;
-
develop independence and self-advocacy, including the ability to make informed choices and take increasing responsibility for themselves;
-
develop an understanding of health, wellbeing and personal safety, supporting them to make positive and informed decisions;
-
develop life skills and functional independence that can be applied across school, home, community and future settings;
-
experience and participate in a wide range of enrichment, cultural and community opportunities, broadening their experiences and aspirations;
-
develop the confidence, skills and understanding required for their next stage of education, employment, independence and adult life.
Through this holistic approach, we seek to ensure that every young person is known, understood and supported as an individual. The curriculum extends beyond academic achievement to develop the personal capabilities, wellbeing, relationships, independence and life experiences that enable young people to thrive within school and beyond.
