Work Experience
In Key Stage 4 Careers lessons, young people are encouraged to explore various career paths and jobs that may interest them in the future. This exploration leads to looking at Work Experience opportunities.
Our careers lead Sharon Chorley arranges offsite visits where young people are encouraged to participate and experience different workplaces. During the Annual review process, work experience is discussed with parents and young people.
Young people actively participate by sharing their thoughts on work experience and discussing potential opportunities with their family. Often, work experience placements are found through family and friends.
In Year 11, young people participate in a block week of work experience in mid-June, where either parents or the young people themselves find a placement. However, at Fairmead, work experience typically begins in Year 10. In certain cases, students may have the opportunity to start work experience as early as Year 9.
To demonstrate readiness for work experience, young people must consistently exhibit the Three 'P's: Polite, Prepared, and Productive.
Posters displaying these expectations are present in every KS4 classroom to remind students of the standards they need to meet.
We hold Secondary assemblies where young people can share their work experience stories with their peers. This encourages everyone to discuss their experiences and reminds them to talk to their families about potential opportunities.
In addition to external work experience, we also offer internal opportunities. Several of our young people have started by working in one of the primary classes and then progressed to organising a week of work experience in a nursery.
Previous placements have included:
Ark at Egwood, Yeovil Rugby Club, Hidden Needs Trust, Bold and Brave Shop, Brimsmore Gardens, Abri Homes, Animal Farm Adventure Park, Greenfield Cafe - Mendip School, Podymore Inn, Amaze Hair, SSDC Country Park, The Arrow, Woods Taxis, School in a Bag to name a few.
