On Thursday 1st October 2026, Deer Class and a group of our young people enjoyed an exciting trip to the Avon and Somerset Police and Fire Headquarters in Portishead.

Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome from PCSO Amy, John, and Owen, who were all eager to show us around. After a quick group photo outside the main building, we headed inside to sign in. Wearing our special red lanyards made us all feel very important!

Our day began in the classroom, where we learned all about the police force and who to call in an emergency. We were particularly amazed by the incredible statistics on how many calls the emergency services handle each year! Next, we split into groups for a fascinating tour of the call handling centre, where everyone did a wonderful job of staying quiet while the staff answered important incoming calls.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite and loved eating alongside the police staff in the main canteen.

The highlight of the day came right after lunch, when a police car arrived with its lights flashing and sirens sounding, while the officer called out a special message: "Fairmead young people!" It was a thrilling end to a fantastic and memorable day out.
