Class 4 visited the Gateway Café to see one of our Class in action on his work experience placement and find out about the different jobs that café workers have to do. He did a fantastic job of welcoming us to the café, serving us our drinks and cakes, and keeping the café clean. Class 4 and all the staff are very proud of him.  It was also a wonderful surprise to be joined by Mrs Felstead, Mrs Barratt, Mrs Berryman and Miss Marks!

It has been a very busy and successful month for Class 8, filled with exciting opportunities and fantastic achievements. Our young people proudly received certificates for the Flying Start Challenge, organised in partnership with Leonardo. This was a wonderful accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of their effort and commitment. A number of our students also took part in a sports day at Westfield School, where they represented the class brilliantly. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and determination were outstanding—massive well done to everyone involved! This term, enrichment sessions have returned to cooking, which the class are thoroughly enjoying. It has been great to see our young people developing valuable life skills that will support their independence in the future. In Humanities, Class 8 have been learning about flooding—understanding the dangers it can present and how to stay safe while helping others. To support this learning, we took a trip to the River Yeo alongside Classes 6 and 7. This provided a valuable real-life context, helping them to recognise potential risks and better understand the impact of flooding. In Creative Media, Class 8 have been creating their own digital stories. Their creativity and effort has really shone through in their work. Alongside all of this, the class have also been working hard during exam time, showing resilience and focus throughout. We are incredibly proud of everything Class 8 have achieved this month—well done to all!

Wow! Where has the time gone? We have had a busy Spring term, where we continued our Life Skills focus of ‘Employability’, practicing and consolidating a range of skills which will help us as we grow up, including recognising people who can help us in the community and being confident communicators in a range of situations. We also enjoyed Careers Day, dressing up in different work uniforms and exploring job roles.   As part of our Life Skills topic, we have begun to grow some different plants, hoping to sell them as part of an enterprise project, so we are watering them and caring for them, patiently waiting for them to bloom, so they will be ready to sell.   In English, our book ‘The Gigantic Turnip’ has been lots of fun! We have enjoyed exploring sensory materials from the story and using our muscles pretending to pull out large vegetables, as well as mapping out the story and building sentences using colourful semantics. We are ending our topic by creating our own versions of the story, choosing characters and vegetables of our own.  World Book Bay was great, we had lots of book related fun, sharing stories with different classes and each other.   In Maths, we have explored patterns, we used colours, sounds and shapes and looked for patterns in the environment. We have also continued to build on counting skills, including using money and different objects in a range of situations.   We have continued to go out into the community each week, focusing on greeting people in shops, recognising people who work there and looking at the jobs they do in store. When we visited Pets at Home, we interviewed the members of staff, asking them what their favourite part of the job was. Unsurprisingly, it was looking after the animals! Some of us even got to watch the assistant feed and look after the animals.  We also interviewed the staff in Morrisons and found that the people we spoke to all had different favourite jobs to do, including stacking the shelves and helping customers.  Our trips to the library have continued to be very exciting, we are more confident with the routines, recognising the purpose of the trip, walking straight to the books and beginning to search for our favourites. We continue to greet the librarian each week, either verbally or using signs or our talker and enjoy choosing books to share with the class. We continue to be responsible when using our library card, putting in the pin code and scanning each book carefully. When scanning our books back in to return them, we carefully look to check that they have scanned and then put them back on the shelf.   Have a lovely Easter break and we will look forward to more fun next term with our new Life skills focus of Hobbies and Interests!

This half term, Class 4 have demonstrated fantastic teamwork and dedication through their exciting enterprise project. From start to finish, the young people have taken real ownership of their work, developing a wide range of practical and creative skills along the way. They began by collecting and carefully cleaning pots, showing great responsibility and attention to detail. The class then worked together to purchase and bag compost, gaining valuable experience in handling resources and understanding the process behind creating a product. Their creativity truly shone as they designed and produced beautiful artwork for their kits, before writing clear and thoughtful instructions to help others grow their sunflowers successfully. Each kit was then carefully packaged, ready to be shared with pride. This project has been a wonderful opportunity for the young people to build confidence, teamwork and independence, while also developing important employability skills in a real-life context. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this project. The class are very excited to see your sunflowers blooming in the summer months! Special thanks also go to Marjorie at Sunflowers of Somerset for her generous donation of sunflower seeds, which helped make this project possible. The entire Class 4 team are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm and teamwork shown by the young people throughout this project.

Class 1 have been exploring a wide range of job roles and workplaces, building their understanding and confidence of the world of work. A highlight this term was an exciting visit to Barclays bank, where the young people were given a sneak peek of the upstairs offices. One young person even stepped into role-play mode, confidently pretending to deliver financial advice over the phone! Back in the classroom, the young people have been strengthening their social and teamwork skills through fun turn-taking activities and group games. These sessions have been a great way to encourage communication, collaboration, and confidence.  Our up-and-coming chef continues to impress with their growing confidence in the kitchen, preparing a variety of delicious recipes. This chef has been a multi-tasking master, managing to cook sweet and sour noodles whilst making a bed at the same time!

In February, Fairmead proudly took part in Safer Internet Day, with an exciting and thought-provoking focus on the world of artificial intelligence (AI). The day sparked a wide range of fascinating discussions across the school, encouraging young people to reflect on their own digital lives. We explored how much time we spend on screens and thought carefully about how we present ourselves online. The young people shared their ideas about the positives of technology, as well as the challenges it can bring, helping them to develop a more balanced understanding of the digital world. One of the most eye-opening parts of the day was discovering just how often we interact with AI without even realising it. From using self-checkout machines in shops, to predictive text on our phones, and even the directions we follow on Google Maps, the young people were surprised to see how much AI is already part of their everyday lives. Throughout the day, the young people were encouraged to think more deeply about how they can stay safe online and use technology responsibly. It was a fantastic opportunity to build awareness, spark curiosity and develop important digital skills that will support them both now and in the future. We are proud of how thoughtfully everyone engaged with these important topics and how they are growing into safe, responsible and informed young people.

This half term, Class 2 have been busy becoming future superstars as we explored the exciting world of employability. We’ve been learning all about different jobs and the important skills we might need when we grow up, from teamwork and communication to confidence and independence. A highlight of our learning has been discovering some of our favourite places - especially when it comes to books! 📚 We enjoyed visits to the library, where we explored a wide range of stories, and a trip to Waterstones, where we were amazed by the huge selection of books. These experiences have inspired a real love of reading in our class, and we can’t wait to visit again. But our adventures didn’t stop there! We also visited a local garden centre 🌼, where we had the chance to practise using money in a real-life setting. We learned how to choose items, check prices and pay for our purchases, helping us to build confidence and independence. It was also a great opportunity to learn more about the different people who work in our community and the roles they play. Class 2 have shown fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the half term, and we are so proud of how they are beginning to think about their futures while developing important life skills along the way.

Squirrels have been exploring “Changes in the World”  through different areas of science. They began by learning about the four seasons , noticing how trees change throughout the year, such as leaves growing, changing colour, and falling. They also talked about how to recognise each season and what clothing is suitable, like wearing coats in winter or lighter clothes in summer. Next, they explored the weather , discussing what rain and sunshine feel like. They compared the weather across the week, helping them understand that weather can change from day to day. They then learned about the sun and the sky , including where the sun is during the day and what happens at night. They talked about daytime and night time activities, understanding that we are awake and active during the day and rest at night.

What a busy term class 3 have had! This term, the focus has been employability skills. Our class text has been 'The Boss of Everyone!' Through this, we have been learning about our families' jobs and practicing being boss for the day. To help support our recount writing, we have also been learning about different roles within the school and visiting a wide range of different work places. We particularly enjoyed going to Yeovil Town Football Club to learn about the role of a footballer as well as the library, cinema and Waterstones. We have also welcomed visitors into our classroom to take part in practical work tasks. Most of us have changed our minds several times on what we want to be when we are older! As a result of a successful story time session in Hedgehogs, our link has continued and we have been visiting the class on a weekly basis and learning how to interact with our youngest children. We made the most of the Spring sunshine by taking part in bikeability lessons and our confidence has grown every week. We had so much fun on World Book Day and loved sharing our costumes and favourite books and the class 3 adults all dressed up as characters from Little Red Riding Hood.

On Tuesday 24th March, Class 5 enjoyed an exciting trip to Cineworld to watch Pets on a Train. The visit provided a fantastic, hands-on experience to support our current English unit on recounts. By immersing themselves in the magic of the big screen, the young people now have a shared experience to draw upon as they practice retelling events in chronological order. The verdict from the young people? The film was a huge hit, receiving an enthusiastic "thumbs up" across the board! We look forward to seeing their adventures translated into some brilliant writing back in the classroom.

On Wednesday 11th March, Class 5 embarked on an immersive cultural journey as part of our Project Day celebrations. Following their previous explorations of Australia and Poland, the young people turned their attention to the rich traditions of Japan. The day was filled with creativity and discovery. The young people delved into the symbolism of the cherry blossom tree before painting their own beautiful interpretations, which are now brightening up our classroom display. The excitement continued into PE, where the class tried out traditional Japanese activities. A particular highlight was the high-stakes tug of war, where the young people’s teamwork led them to a triumphant victory against the adults! To round off the physical activities, the young people practiced Tai Chi, following the rhythmic movements of 'The Tale of a Dragon'. The day concluded with a deep dive into the world of Pokémon and Anime—a huge hit that left everyone inspired by Japan’s modern pop culture.

Deer Class  have been having a fantastic time attending their weekly tennis coaching sessions at Yeovil Tennis Club. Each week, the young people head to the courts full of enthusiasm, ready to practise their skills and learn new techniques from the coaches. Through fun games and exciting drills, the young people are developing their coordination, teamwork, and confidence. It’s been wonderful to see how much progress they’ve made already—from mastering basic racket control to successfully rallying. The sessions are always full of smiles, energy, and encouragement, and the young people look forward to returning every week. A big thank you to the coaches at Yeovil Tennis Club for making the sessions so enjoyable and inspiring!
