Our curriculum: The three C’s
Our curriculum is built around three key areas: Communication, Community and Careers (and futures) - known as the three C’s. These provide a clear, progressive pathway for all young people, supporting them to develop the skills, confidence and independence they need for life beyond school.
Each area is carefully structured across three stages: Emerging, Developing and Securing. This ensures that every young person can access learning at the right level, celebrate success, and continue to make meaningful progress over time. The curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and personalised, recognising that every young person’s journey is unique.
Communication
Communication sits at the heart of everything we do. We support young people to develop their ability to understand and express themselves in ways that are meaningful to them.
At the Emerging stage, the focus is on early communication, building attention, interaction and the foundations of shared understanding. As young people move into the Developing stage, they begin understanding and expressing their needs, choices and ideas with increasing confidence. By the Securing stage, they are working towards complex communication, using a range of methods to engage with others, share opinions and participate more fully in the world around them.
Community
We aim to help all young people feel a strong sense of belonging and connection, both within school and in the wider community.
At the Emerging stage, young people develop belonging and connection, forming positive relationships and feeling safe and valued. In the Developing stage, the focus shifts to participation and independence, where young people begin to take a more active role in group activities and make choices about their involvement. At the Securing stage, they build towards responsibility and contribution, engaging with their community in meaningful ways and developing skills for greater independence.
Careers
Our careers curriculum prepares young people for their future by building awareness, confidence and practical skills.
At the Emerging stage, young people develop awareness and imagination, exploring the world of work through play, curiosity and experience. During the Developing stage, they engage in exploration and participation, trying different activities and beginning to understand their interests and strengths. By the Securing stage, the focus is on preparation and transition, supporting young people to take their next steps with confidence - whether that is further education, training or employment.
