Working with apprentices from Leonardo’s, Class 8 have been getting hands-on with the fascinating world of aerodynamics as they work toward an exciting end goal: building a fully functional glider.
To kick off the project, the young people have been investigating what really makes an aircraft fly. From lift and drag to stability and control, they’ve been exploring the science behind how air moves around different shapes.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the process so far has been designing and testing paper aeroplanes. By experimenting with different wing shapes and folding techniques, they are discovering which designs glide the furthest and stay the steadiest - valuable insights that will help them choose the best shape for their final glider.
The room has been filled with creativity, curiosity, and plenty of laughter as each new design takes flight. With every test throw, they’re learning more about how small changes can make a big difference in performance.
This practical, playful approach is helping build a strong foundation for the more complex engineering challenges ahead. We can’t wait to see their ideas take shape as the glider project continues to soar!
